Dinner was a strained affair. They went to Theodore's club and were treated with candlelight and an expensive port imported from a small French village where Theodore and Betty Elizabeth had spent their honeymoon. Unfortunately, the subtlety of the evening was lost on Peggy, who, after a few drinks, insisted on recounting how she got pregnant in high school. The whole topic, complete with Peggy's liberal use of four letter words, alienated their pretentious hostess. So, instead of a protracted after-dinner conversation as Betty Elizabeth had planned, the foursome returned to the condo and retired for the evening. |
